This is perfect timing for me - I was telling my vet about my 5 month old Aussie’s resource guarding with the other dogs and some growling at me. She said although he is well behaved I need to be a stronger leader and simply not allow him to get away with this. We do keep a long line and a martingale on him to intercept any unwanted behaviour. My vet showed me a few things which were much firmer than what carol is doing. My vet had me practice few a exercises with him and there was an amazing transformation in his attitude towards me. He also has to earn everything and for now he has to be invited onto to the couch and bed - he sleeps on the floor at night. He seems more content and happy. It is a process but there is lots of hope now that he learning he is not the king of the castle😊😊
Mine is only 12 weeks. Chipug mix. She bites me, but not bad.. And not dad at ALL!! She absolutely loves everyone else. Just likes me as her chew toy.. As much as I tell her No, or put her down. She just comes right back.. Time to talk to the vet..
Could you explain more about what methods did you use? My 7months Border Collie is showing a lot of resource guarding as well and we don't know what to do.
This reminds me that 92% of dog training is really people training. And this couple are awesome for getting training and for letting us learn along with them. Still here!
Exactly. They want to please us. We have to give them the information. If we're bad communicators, they won't ever do what we tell them to because the understanding isn't there. They are doing the best with the information we give them.
This was such a novel idea for video! I credit the clients willing to take part and as always Instructor Carol with so much wisdom. So many habits and natural movements to observe here.
Still Here! ;) Excellent instructor. Intelligent, consistent, clear, loaded with information, she moves the lesson right along. I am learning so much in just this one lesson, my dog should learn if I apply this correctly. Love this method!! Phenomenal instruction and instructor, Carol.
Great to see one of your lessons all the way through. My 6 months old beagle is great and sit and wait at the door until I release him. This is definitely a next step for us to practice . Thank you so much for sharing this with us all x
It’s interesting to see how quickly she responds to the trainer just based on the trainer’s leader-like body language. Gotta keep that “power pose” haha
Instructor Carol is awesome ! Wish you were closer to me - in Minnesota. I have a frenchie and has become aggressive to other dogs when walking or at our fence. Having a tough time breaking it.
Absolutely teach to respecting space. Got hit from behind by a 8kg dog, running full tilt in dog park, knocked me flat on my back and tore my meniscus. Really it couldn't see me!? Thank you for this excellent video.
Still here I’m currently in the Life Skill program with 10m old lab puppy Finn. It’s very helpful to see the exercises in a real training situation. It helps me understand what to expect in a real life situation. It also helps seeing owners learning the process of training. I have wondered if McCann could record a real class and make it available to online students so we can see a little more how a dog not knowing the exercises might respond at first and how we should react to various situations when first teaching an exercise. This video is very helpful!
Still here! I wished I lived closer to you all, but I'm hesitant about the online class. Just ordered my gentle leader and some chewables. This is a great uncut training, thank you!
still here! Great information. Your videos are extremely helpful for me as im new to owning a dog. your videos have helped me raise and lead my dog for the last two years through all his puppy and adolecent stages
Still here! Went through the life skills program 2 years ago with my now 4 year golden! Remembering that puppy stage 😬 but also it’s good to review some skills that have gotten a little “lazy”!
Feroucious aggression when closing crate door at bed time about 1/wk to 1/month; 4 yr old mini-goldendoodle, please advise causes & solutions? Using hard shell Pet Mate Sky crate. history: Valor K-9 Accademy 2 wk away training at 2 yrs, some e-coller use. Overall a sweet dog. Thank you!
I really respect your trainings and how you train. But how can you watch this video and not see how hard a" GENTLE " leader is on a dogs neck? I will do this same training and use a Herm Sprinter prong collar . With that said thank you for a new prospective! Really Thank you
I have the same observation, dog was getting annoyed! A slip lead to me would be a good starting tool for obedience! Easier to control for pressure and release to make the dog sit and stop from moving forward! Awesome video overall!
Jerking a dog’s head like that while on a gentle leader can cause serious neck and spinal damage. While the puppy was pulling after the treat on the floor the “trainer” was jerking her head to the side, that’s not safe at all. Use a martingale or a prong to give a small correction and say “leave it”. Reward when the dog leaves it and looks at you.
It's a loaded question... you'll get people's opinions rather than definitive answers. For me and I put emphasis on "FOR ME" , I'm more inclined to use a flat collar or a slip lead to avoid any neck damage . Obviously on micro dogs that possibility still exists with anything on the neck or head
I was very surprised & upset by the leash jerking corrections the trainer was perfect!! I thought McC’s training was positive but I see I was wrong!! Made me VERY uncomfortable!
You cant always train a dog with positive only and treats - this dog has gotten away with too much for too long she needs to know who the leader is. A few pops could be the difference between a dog living or being put down for aggression. My vet said she is so tired of having aggression consults or putting dogs down because they thought they only needed rainbows and butterflies to train their dogs. Just like kids, dogs need a leader and to know right from wrong. I really appreciate this realistic training.
i think the trainer is being too nice; what i do whenever the dog starts to try to pass me is I say ahh... and stick my foot out and nudge her back with my foot. After 3 or 4 times she realizes she cannot push past me and will be watching me closely to make sure my leg does not come out in front of her. i also do this against a wall so she only can go forward or backward.
Are You Accidentally Being A BAD Leader For Your Dog?

hitting on the aggressive reactive behavior!!! It’s hard but appreciate helping us understand the approach

Still here. It’s nice to insert a full training now and again so I can get a feel for when things don’t go perfectly. Appreciate it

Still here. So many great tips and tricks for building relationship with dog. Love that Carol is black and white in expectations.
Thank you. I just joined with McCann trainers and I love the activity involved with my 4 1/2 mth GSD.
This is awesome seeing the whole process.
The female trainee was a really great learner! Love to watch it ❤
Still here, Carol! In fact, my 2nd time through-SO much excellent information in this video. You are a genius!

She is barely jerking her head and this dog just needs to know who is boss

can you use gentle leader on 8 lb dog forbthis
You absolutely can Betty! You'll need an Extra Small size ;)

Yes. You can. But please be careful. As with any tool it can cause damage. But if you need them they exist. So good luck with your little dog 🐕

I am in no means an expert, but I would think you could... but need to use extra caution not to cause damage to their neck/spine while doing so.

Once, you have to be clear from day 1, since that will come in handy during puberty, many dogs suddenly go wild because they have had no rules
I agree. I cringed every time Carol pulled that dog up by her neck.
And how would you fix food aggression? By giving dog more treats?
