The 8:00 mark literally just changed the game. Ive never ever in my life been able to play any more than 16th notes at 140bpm to 16th notes at 170 bpm in less than 10 minutes. Literally insane. You’re my hero. 30 mins ago I was stressed out for studio work in February. I’m going to laughing by that time, now that I’ve got this technique and exercise in my book. You’re awesome.
Of all the youtube videos I have been watching, you helped me finally...Tried heel-toe and was stuck at 180-190bpm with unequal beats...Tried swivel till 220bpm easily, but hurt my knees...I was trying ankle for a long time, but I could play only above 190bpm and not slower...After watching your videos, things changed like miracle...God bless you and I declare that you are the greatest metal teacher...Believe me, I know.
Good seeing this channel grow. In these crazy strange times, it's good to see drum masters like Marthyn shine more and more. Good job with the work you put in, the intelligence and the dedication. But I will tell you. My secret to improving speed is constantly being chased by my 2 year old son Orion. Whew the workout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Calves and hip flexors are guaranteed sore for at least 2 days.
Marthyn is the best teacher ever 😂 - ever since I joined the drum technique academy I’ve gained 20 bpm on my double kicks - I can hold 240 for 8 bars when I started I couldn’t even do 240 for 1 bar
Wow Marthyn! Such great quality in this video! And I LOVE the new filming style being used here! Absolutely “leveled up” the quality and professionalism with this one! Much love from Atlantic Canada
Hey Marthyn, I just wanted to take a second to say thank you for this. Even after working through the bass drum mastery course twice I still struggled to master the transition from more relaxed single strokes into contracting the quadriceps and stabilizing my legs while I accelerated into faster speeds. With a combination of your courses, working through stick control with my hands and feet, and long slow endurance runs with heels down I have been able to achieve speeds of 240-250. When I purchased your course at the beginning of the year I could not achieve anything above 200. Getting comfortable and consistent with transitioning to faster tempo‘s and learning how to control my body at those speeds is the final piece in my progression to extreme tempos. I tried this exercise today and I think it is the missing link. Thank you so much for all you do for the metal drumming community, and for your tireless work to help your students. Obviously it requires an absolutely profound amount of work on our end, but proper guidance shaves years off of that process. Looking forward to much more growth and content. Cheers from Texas!
Always get to a certain limit then either my hip cramps or my calves and hamstring do. Partly because I used the old DW5000's which are heavy by today's standards. Just about to buy a fully customised 12 piece after a 10 year break so got to learn from paradiddle all the way back up 😅
even having a huge struggle with my left side after an accident, i feel a big difference while having these classes!! you are amazing! thank you! cheers from CV Islands
Awesome drummer from the band Belphegor: you are inspiring and awesome (and very nice band btw!). Thanks for your tips in both hands/feet techniques, as you explained in Lucifer Incestus higher tempo ;) You rule!
I love how you explained that anything above 220 you need to use triggers. I was wondering that. Almost every drummer I’ve seen playing that fast, you can tell the drums are triggered. Especially when their legs and feet are barely moving but they’re getting this huge clicky sound out of their drums!
Yeah unfortunately once you get above a certain speed it's impossible to get a usable kick sound without triggers. You have to use more conservative movements at those speeds so it's only natural that the velocity will be a bit weaker as a result.
You are absolutely amazing sir....!!!! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 Top quality breakdown of all the theory and practice necessary to develop high speed double bass
Once again, awesome content PLUS much improved video quality and presentation. Just don't get to wild with the in-between humor videos ;) Thanks, Marthyn! Cheers Sam
Great video, love the details explaining what muscle groups are used during each exercise. This helps me get a better understanding of whether I am doing the technique wrong our right.
Hehe you got me SO good!!! Ive never seen you before, so i presumed you were one these "drum teachers" who only talks and "reacts"....holy shit was I wrong!!!....keep up the good work! Much love from Denmark!
Hi Marthyn! I am probably not the first to make this wish but i`d love to hear you react and analyze Thomas Haake and "Bleed".. i searched if there was one but i didnt find one from you. I know many other drummers have reacted to Bleed and thats why i really would like to know what YOU think of it because i respect your opinion more than any others. I understand if youn dont want to do this but at least i tried..thanks for all the videos!
Slow it down and see what you're doing. If you're doing just the ankle technique start slow to isolate the calf muscle. Thats all you want to use. Go as slow as you have to so you only use the calf muscles then speed up until you notice you're using other muscles and slow down to get below that. If you work at those lower tempos you will gain muscle and better control and then be able to speed up from there.
I had this problem too. To fix it, I lowered my stool so my knees were at the same height as my hip joints and moved my stool back to ensure my knees were behind my ankles. This forces your calf muscles to work for the strokes and prevents your upper leg and shins from trying to do the stroke. Don't recommend a low stool height forever as you might get a sore lower back.
There is a thing in gym workout called mind to muscle connection. It happens with time and imagination to trick your body to activate/deactivate targeted muscles. Try to imagine that the pedal is behind your foot instead of right under it and use your heels to generate the stroke.
maybe up your spring tension or adjusting your batter head for better rebound (sometimes that means looser, sometimes tighter). You shouldn't be having to manually lift your feet back up, let the pedals and rebound should do the work
Forgive me if this is a silly question but could this workout be applied to tempos below 200? Say, 160-170 and working up to 200+? (Edit: nevermind I was impatient and just heard you mention this can work at slower tempos. Lol)
My problem is that I apply pressure from my upper leg when I don't want to. This makes the strokes quite uneven. I only have this problem with my right leg. Is there any way to get rid of this issue?
There is one problem. I can play fast, but not slower than 175bpm and I cannot increase or decrease the speed gradually...I need to stop and play at another tempo all over...Can you guide on playing at slowest tempo possible and increase gradually? Thank you.

Man, i love the increased quality in the film production, shows how much care you put in to this stuff, to improve it
thank you!

Please, invite Mauricio Weimar to explain his techniques too. He's awesome.
I just can't get around my shin muscles.. They always start to get involved by themselves and start to hurt quickly

These videos are a million times better than Drumeo👍🏻👌

I find it a lot more difficult to do ankle technique with the calf. I find it easier to learn with the shins. Did you struggle with this as well?
not at all
I also want to increase it using whole leg
1:04 Hahahahaha
Hello
Love the memes
It would be great if these videos had subtitles in Spanish
They have spanish subtitles...but you got to click the subtitle button (and select spanish) yourself 😀
i can't even play 150BPM
